First Aid at Work (FAW)

Who is this course for?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is designed for workplaces in a higher risk category (engineering, manufacturing, warehousing, construction, chemicals) and workplaces that may have a high number of employees and/or employees with a variety of underlying health conditions (heart problems, diabetes anaphylaxis, high blood pressure, etc).

The FAW also provides comprehensive training for those who are required to be the designated first aider within their workplace.

What's Covered?

 On completion of First Aid at Work, successful candidates will be able to:


  • understand the role of the first aider, including reference to:
    • the importance of preventing cross infection
    • the need for recording incidents and actions
    • use of available equipment
  • assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • administer first aid to an adult casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
  • administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an adult, including using a defibrillator
  • administer first aid to an adult casualty who is choking
  • administer first aid to an adult casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • administer first aid to an adult casualty who is suffering from shock
  • provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
  • administer first aid to an adult casualty with:
    • injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
    • chest injuries
    • burns and scalds
    • eye injuries
    • sudden poisoning
    • anaphylactic shock
  • recognise the presence of major illness (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes) and provide appropriate first aid

 

In addition to the above (which is mandated by the HSE) Global Medical training also cover the following topics on their EFAW courses ay no extra cost - because our experience tells us that everyone should have these extra skills 


  • resuscitation for children and infants
  • recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis (including the use of an autoinjector pen) 
  • recognition and treatment of someone suffering a head injury

How long is it?

This course is 3 days, face to face. The standard course times are 0900-1600 which includes a 30 minute lunch break and 2 x 15 minute refreshment breaks. If you request additional material to be covered then these times will need to be extended accordingly.  

Assessment

Assessment consists of continual observation in relation to the practical elements, along with a short question paper consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. There are a number of practical scenarios over the 3 days to get you used to using your skills. 

Certification

After successful completion of the course, a certificate will be awarded and this certificate is valid for three years.

  • reliability, disposition and communication skills
  • aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills
  • ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures
  • normal duties, which should be such that they may be able to respond immediately and rapidly to an emergency
